Made with fresh figs, Doce de Figos, or Fig Jam, is a delicious preserve. It tastes slightly tart, sweet, and slightly cinnamon-flavored. Savor it as a topping for desserts, on toast, or with cheese.
Ingredients:
- 1 kg fresh figs, washed and stems removed
- 500g granulated sugar
- 1 lemon, juiced
- 1 cinnamon stick
Instructions:
Cut the fresh figs into small pieces
In a large pot, combine the figs, granulated sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon stick
Stir the mixture well and let it sit for about 1 hour to allow the figs to release their juices
Place the pot over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring frequently
Once it starts boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 45-60 minutes, or until the jam thickens to your desired consistency
Stir occasionally
Remove the cinnamon stick and discard it
Transfer the hot fig jam into sterilized jars, leaving about 1/4 inch of headspace at the top
Seal the jars tightly and allow them to cool to room temperature
Store the Doce de Figos in a cool, dark place
It can be stored for several months
